the fiance just found out he doesn't have to work sunday (silly reality tv shows and their horrible scheduling) but that means we are driving to palm springs for this:
last minute road trips make me feel like a teenager again! we found a budget-friendly, cheesy-terrific hotel and we are leaving this afternoon. i couldn't be more excited and we will get to see our wedding dj in action!

project: weddingroom !
about a month into our engagement (that would be january 2009 for those of you who don't have our engagement date memorized) i decided to start saving all of the jars that come through our kitchen. first i saw a tutorial on how to make jars into hanging laneterns, just like martha. then i saw some lovely drip candles in amber colored bottles, so i started saving those as well. i rinse them all, take off the loose labels, and stick them in the "weddingroom" which is an "out of sight, out of mind" type of place that holds all things wedding and was a complete disaster.
the jars will be used to hold fresh herbs, thin bread sticks and tea lights at the wedding. the rest will be turned into hanging lanterns for the outdoor rehearsal dinner. they still need to be soaked and washed and scrubbed and de-labeled and wired and hung, but that won't happen for a few months.
last weekend i decided it was time to really start working on invitations, so the wedding mess was all cleared up and it is now a wedding workshop. and the invitation project is running smoothly!
i really should take some "after" photos to prove that the space really is clean and workable, but you will just have to trust me.
also, it would appear that we eat a lot of jarred food. you would be correct in assuming that from the above photo. in my defense, there are a lot of applesauce-for-the-preschoolers jars in there. and we really, really like the garlic chipotle salsa from trader joes. and marinara sauce. and rogue stout! don't judge!

project: summer shower !
going to a shower thrown for me isn't much of a project. which is good since i couldn't handle another project at the moment. i am deep into the invitation creating phase of wedding planning, and it is crazy.
luckily, i took a moment to stop into anthropologie a few weeks ago and they were having a great dress sale. i bought a couple of dresses for our pre-wedding-party in palm springs, and a lovely dress to wear to the shower next month. maybe my cute dress and shoes will help ease my embarrassment at being the center of attention. that and a couple of pre-shower mimosas.

words: colors and blogs !
our super awesome day-of-coordinator, alicia of in the new weddings, wrote such a cute little blog about us yesterday! we are so excited to work with her, just knowing we have her there to help us out has been such a huge relief.
in other news, we finally, finally, FINALLY settled on colors. that is pretty epic news, especially if you have talked to me any time over the past five months, because all i do is complain about not being able to pick colors. this means i can finally get to work on pumping out those invites.

project: music (pt. 2)!
we suffered a minor setback in terms of wedding music today. the musician who was going to play during the ceremony just found out he will be on tour in europe in september. while it is disappointing, i am happy for him and his family! tour is fun and great! so while searching for a new musician, i need to focus on the good. the good being: michael antonia of the flashdance.
i know, i know... every single blog out there has written about this team, but i have to agree, they are like the be-all end-all of hip weddings. i feel hipper just by thinking about it.
i talked to SO MANY different djs, and none of them clicked. it is hard to find someone who: is local, is nice on the phone/e-mail (one dj kept me on the phone for 30 minutes while he mumbled about his drug use... really? is that how you get clients?), and who has the best taste in music ever.
but then i found mr. antonia and it was perfection. he lives in our neighborhood (90039, represent) and he likes morrissey (little known fact: i am a slightly-reformed weird obessive moz fan)! nothing better. also, he has a really cute baby and i love babies.
so check out the flashdance. and i will just keep focusing on the good, and start a new ceremony musician search.
any suggestions?

words and photos: shoes, shoes, shoes.
do you know how hard it is to find cute vegan shoes?
really, realllly hard.
i dream of: kitten heel, peep toe, mustard yellow or sea foam green shoes for under $200. is that too much to ask? i just don't wanna wear dead cows on my feet.
anyway, top contenders so far:
what to do what to do what to do what to do. keep looking.

words and photos: homestyle !
i am really, really struggling to make all the elements of this wedding come together.
we want it to feel like home. classy, fancy home. we want it to be the wedding we would have at our own home, if our own home could hold one hundred people (because if our home could hold 100 people, it would be here.)
that said, it is hard when i see a great wedding like this.
hands down the best bouquet i have ever seen.
grey and yellow? wonderful. palm springs pool party?! so fun.
i have weddinglust.
.....
last weekend i did some practice tablescapes and such. i also started a big project: hand making 115 mini chalkboard menus. i actually had to purchase a saw for this project! neat.
we won't be using these colors ( i just happen to only own orange napkins, and found super cheap perfect brown fabric at ikea). our caterer has tablecloths and napkins, but they are purple and brown striped. i want darkdark brown? and burlapy texture? i think...
so far, i think it looks too "glassy." i need more texture in there. but i can't let myself buy anything until i really decide on colors.
i must say i do love the way the chalkboards look (they will eventually be gocco printed with the menu, as soon as we have a final menu). each guest will have a personalized button as a place card.
our caterer uses stemless wine glasses and ball jars as water/tea glasses, so that will change the look a bit as well. there will also be several 7" hurricane vases with candles and full jars of rosemary on each table. along with pitchers of sangria. and bowl of olives. and nuts. and olive oil. and baskets of bread. what started off looking empty is beginning to sound very full.
seriously, blogger friends, how did you pick your colors? help!

project: centerpieces pt. 2 !
the centerpieces have changed direction. my bell and apothecary jars arrived a few weeks ago, and i finally got around to doing a few practice pieces again.
lids on or lids off? i can't decide.
i am trying to keep it simple. less is more in this case. in a few months i will be picking up a flat of mini succulents and hopefully by late summer our rosemary plants will be huge. i want to try some layering of different sands and soil, to see how that looks in the apothecary jars. i also want to pick up some wood slices.
i did a trial table setting as well, more on that soon!
